The Kingdom Baptist Church in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood hosted a health fair pop-up clinic and breast cancer awareness event that included the University of Illinois Cancer Center’s Office of Community Engagement and Health Equity and was in conjunction with the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF) Research Matters for All of Us-Chicago. Cancer Center Associate Director of Translational Medicine V.K. Gadi, MD, PhD, (pictured center) discussed the importance of community partnership in research to fight breast cancer, a disease Black women are more likely to die from than white women. Also featured was Yvonne Collins, MD, a Gynecologic Oncologist (pictured left), who is the Chicago citywide coordinator for DREF Research Matters for All of Us. The All of Us Research Program is an effort by the National Institutes of Health to build a diverse nationwide health database of 1 million people. Collins also is the Chief Medical Officer at CountyCare, a Medicaid health plan in Cook County. Nurse Darcel Dowell (pictured right) oversees Kingdom Baptist’s health care ministry and the October 29 event was part of that work.
