He may not be a rock star on stage, but the University of Illinois College of Medicine considers Pritesh Patel one with his patients.
The Department of Medicine annually recognizes one faculty member from each division as a “Divisional Rockstar” for their contributions to the department. Patel, MD, associate director of the Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) program in the division of hematology and oncology and member of the UI Cancer Center’s Translational Oncology program, was so named for Fiscal Year 2019.
Patel’s clinical work has focused on two groups of patients: those with multiple myeloma and patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing stem cell transplantation. His laboratory has analyzed outcomes of Black patients who underwent autologous stem cell transplantation for multiple myeloma. They were the first group to show that myeloma patients with renal impairment have superior treatment free survival as compared to patients with normal renal function when undergoing autologous stem cell transplant.
