WGN featured University of Illinois Cancer Center member Nadim Mahmud, MD, PhD, part of the Translational Oncology research program, in a story about umbilical cord blood. Mahmud’s lab has worked on a strategy to replicate the stem cells so there are enough to potentially treat some patients with cancer. Currently, Mahmud’s lab is working on generating a bridge graft which once tested can be given to patients to boost low blood cell counts following anti-cancer therapy. Watch the story here and you’ll see him beginning at the 3:42 mark.
