Victor Gordeuk, MD, OTHER

Dr. Victor Gordeuk is a Professor of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Sickle Cell Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has extensive experience in participating in and leading multi-center clinical, translational and genetic research projects in sickle cell disease and other hematologic conditions. This includes serving as the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded multi-center PUSH study, which sought to characterize the natural history of sickle cell disease and its complications in a multi-institutional cohort of children and adolescents. Dr. Gordeuk was site PI and a part of the team responsible for characterizing the predictors of complications of sickle cell disease in the NIH-supported Walk-PHaSST study. He currently serves as corresponding PI for the Chicago site of the NHLBI-organized Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium (SCDIC). His past work includes characterizing iron overload as a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma in southern Africa. He has been a leader in the team that described congenital polycythemia due to a homozygous mutation in the von Hippel Lindau (VHL) gene that is responsible for the VHL tumor predisposition syndrome. More recently, Dr. Gordeuk was involved in evaluating risk factors for thrombosis in patients with polycythemia vera and outcome disparities according to ethnicity in patients with myeloproliferative syndromes. Currently, they are investigating the risk of cancer in patients with sickle cell disease. His research is focused on sickle cell disease as well as iron metabolism, overload and deficiency.
