Dr. Marc Atkins has served as University of Illinois at Chicago’s (UIC) Director of the Institute for Juvenile Research since 2013. He bases his research on implementing new models of mental health practice in urban communities. Dr. Atkins focuses on the enhancement of natural capacity of community resources to support children’s mental health and well-being.
His work utilizes diffusion of innovation framework, including studies on key opinion leaders, social network theory, and professional learning communities in education, mental health, and their interface. For over two decades, he has been a consultant to the Illinois Department of Mental Health, the Chicago Public Schools, the Illinois State Board of Education, the City of Chicago Office of Family and Youth Support Services, and the Chicago Department of Health.
Dr. Atkins has also served as lead evaluator for the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority and the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority on region-wide violence prevention programs.
