Cancer Awareness …
A “Let’s Talk About Cervical Cancer” event organized by the University of Illinois Cancer Center’s Community Engagement and Health Equity (CEHE) Office featured Cancer Center member Caryn Peterson, PhD, whose research focuses on the determinants of disparities in cancer outcomes, and Yvonne Collins, MD, a gynecologic oncologist and Chief Medical Officer at CountyCare, a Medicaid health plan part of Cook County Health.
About 20 people attended the June 3 event, which also was supported by the community service organization We Care 2 Agency, and held at Boxing Off The Block, a youth boxing club on Chicago’s West Side.
New Research …
Cancer Center member Shikha Jain, MD, FACP, is the corresponding author on the paper, Flattening Hierarchical Structures to Empower Women Trainee Leaders on Social Media Teams, published in May the Journal of Medical Internet Research. In the article, Jain and her coauthors “share our experience empowering women trainees and leadership through a flattened hierarchical social media team structure with supporting evidence from measurable outcomes.”
Health Disparities Focus …
The Cancer Center was a sponsor of the Equal Hope gala featuring Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. Yamile Molina, PhD, the Cancer Center’s Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement is a board member at Equal Hope, whose core mission is to reduce women’s health disparities. Representing the Cancer Center at the June 7 event were Director Jan Kitajewski, PhD; Associate Director for Administration Ahlam Al-Kodmany, PhD; Senior Director of Development Jane Erb; Community Engagement and Health Equity (CEHE) Office Director Dedra Reis, MPH; Cancer Center members Abiola Ibraheem, MD, and Pamela Ganschow, MD; and Research Specialist Paola Torres, MPH.
