Registration is open for the Dr. Tapas Das Gupta Cancer Research Symposium, sponsored by the University of Illinois Cancer Center. The virtual event will be held on Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A group of nationally renowned experts in cancer research, and patient advocate Wenora Johnson, will address the theme, “Framing Value Across the Cancer Care Continuum: Leveraging Yesterday’s Lesson to Create a Better Tomorrow.” The symposium concludes with a panel discussion moderated by Cancer Center member Dr. Shannon MacLaughlan.

Fabian M. Johnston, MD, MHS
Assistant Professor of Surgery and Co-Director of the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program
Johns Hopkins University
Dr. Johnston’s areas of clinical expertise include colorectal cancer, cytoreductive surgery, gastric cancer, gastroesophageal cancer, gastrointestinal cancers and tumors, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), neuroendocrine tumors, pancreatic cancer, and sarcoma.
Johnston holds leadership and committee positions at various organizations, including education committee member for the Association of Academic Surgeons, the Association of Academic Surgeons’ representative for the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons Committee for Surgical Palliative Care. He is also a member of Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Andrea Hayes-Jordan, MD, FACS

Dr. Hayes-Jordan is professor of pediatric surgery and surgical oncology at the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital. She serves as the hospital’s Surgeon-in-Chief and the Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery. Hayes-Jordan manages a basic science laboratory which focuses on rare sarcomas, and also maintains clinical research efforts. She specializes in refractory and resistant tumors in children, specifically soft tissue sarcomas.
Oluwadamilola (Lola) Fayanju, MD, MA, MPHS, FACS

Dr. Fayanju is an academic breast surgeon whose research and clinical practice is centered on providing compassionate, evidence-based, patient-centered, and equitable care to individuals with malignant and benign breast disease.
Fayanju serves as Chief of Breast Surgery, Surgical Director at Rena Rowan Breast Center, and Innovation Faculty at Penn Center for Cancer Care Innovation (PC3i).
The annual symposium honors Dr. Tapas Das Gupta, a renowned surgical oncologist and prolific researcher who has since retired. Das Gupta was the founding head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at UI Health. Throughout his storied career, Das Gupta served as president of the Chicago Surgical Society and is a past recipient of the University of Illinois Distinguished Faculty Award, as well as a University Scholar. He consistently received funding from federal agencies and industry organizations and is the author of 275 papers and co-editor of two books.
