As part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inaugural National Hispanic/Latino Family Cancer Awareness Week, Univision Chicago interviewed University of Illinois Cancer Center member Matías E. Sánchez, MD, about cancer in the community.

Sánchez specializes in treating patients with different blood cancers at UI Health, and he is Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago.

In the interview with Univision news anchor Natalia Girard, Sánchez urged viewers to be proactive about cancer screenings, especially if there is a previous cancer diagnosis in the immediate family. The pair also discussed the importance of clinical trial participation and how to access cancer care.

At UI Health, Sánchez specializes in treating patients who need stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies. His work focuses on how to best deliver these innovative treatments to patients and how to improve access to these specific treatments.
