Md. Wasim Khan, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago. He joined UIC in 2017. He is Principal Investigator on a $1.6 million U.S. Department of Defense Impact Award focused on liver disease and liver cancer with two fellow Cancer Center members as co-investigators. The team previously identified a kind of protein, a hexokinase called HKDC1, and they have evidence it is involved in the progression of both liver disease and liver cancer. His research evaluates the role and therapeutic potential of HKDC1 as an anti-cancer agent as it will lead to treatments that target novel oncogenic pathways that are independent of those targeted by existing drugs.
