Take Action at the Cancer Center
Every year, University of Illinois Cancer Center partners with UI Health/Mile Square Health Center, and more than 55 community and national organizations, to increase cancer screening and community engagement.
Chicago Cancer Health Equity Collaborative (ChicagoCHEC)
The Chicago Cancer Health Equity Collaborative (ChicagoCHEC) is a National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer partnership led by the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, Northeastern Illinois University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. The mission of the collaborative is to advance cancer health equity through meaningful scientific discovery, education, training, and community engagement.
Take a look at just a few of our many other collaborations:
Research and Implementation of Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Programs at Mile Square Health Center
Mile Square Health Center is a federally qualified health center (FQHC) that is affiliated with UI Health. We work with Mile Square and many of our partners on prevention and early detection of cervical, breast, lung, colorectal, and oral and neck cancer screening.
Breast Cancer Screening Parties
In collaboration with the Chicago Department of Public Health and Mile Square, as well as a number of community organizations, we have hosted breast cancer screening events focused on the populations served by the organizations. Having focused events allows our team to address specific barriers each unique population may have that will lead to higher rates of cancer prevention screening, increased reach, and improved health outcomes.
Grant Partners
We have an established partnership with two safety-net hospitals — The Loretto Hospital and Norwegian American Hospital — that is focused on building organizational capacity to increase cancer screening rates in cervical cancer for the west side of Chicago.
Community Navigation Toolkit and Health Systems Initiative
We worked with the Illinois Department of Public Health on two programs focused on increasing breast and cervical cancer screening rates. The first phase was implementing evidence-based initiatives for breast cancer screenings at the Back of the Yards Mile Square Health Clinic. In just the first year, breast cancer screening rates in the neighborhood increased from 60.5% to 71.4%.
