What If…Awards for Creative Medical Research

  • Internal Submission Deadline (REQUIRED): 01/08/25
  • Full Proposal Deadline: 02/15/25
  • Purpose: The What If…Awards for Creative Medical Research program is accepting applications from tenured faculty at all levels for projects in biomedical or health research that, if successful, could ultimately lead to significant advances in the prevention, detection, treatment, cure, care delivery, or survivorship of cancer, especially brain, pancreatic, or lung cancer, neurological disease, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, or rare diseases. Interdisciplinary or convergent, collaborative projects — including community-engaged projects — are highly encouraged. Platforms and systems-level approaches that are relevant to multiple disease areas are within scope. Projects must be distinct from the ideas currently pursued in an investigator’s research program. The award provides $125,000 per year for two years ($250,000 total; direct costs only) and requires a 1:1 match by the awardee’s institution, for a total project budget of $250,000 per year for two years ($500,000 total; direct costs only). If interested in applying for a limited submission opportunity, please have your draft ready for review 1-2 days before the limited submission deadline.

The University of Illinois Cancer Center has approval to pursue the following grant opportunities from private funders through its Advancement team. As a Cancer Center member, please notify and work with Jane Erb ([email protected]) and her Advancement team if you have an interest in any of the following current opportunities or would like further information. The Advancement team will provide grant development support and handle submissions as awards count toward the Cancer Center’s philanthropic goals.
