Remembering Dr. Tapas Das Gupta

Tapas Das Gupta, MD, PhD, DSc, the first University of Illinois Cancer Center Director, a renowned surgical oncologist and prolific researcher, passed away in December. He was 92.

The Cancer Center honors him by holding a fall symposium in his name in recognition of his many contributions to medicine, cancer research and patient care. The 2025 Dr. Tapas Das Gupta Cancer Research Symposium will be held Friday, October 3.

During his time at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Das Gupta was head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago. During his tenure, he developed a diverse biorepository of surgical specimens. He served on several prestigious national committees and was an editorial board member for many scientific journals. He was the principal investigator of several National Cancer Institute (NCI)-sponsored grants, as well as a Research Training Grant that received continuous funding for 22 years. He authored over 275 publications and co-edited two books.
