Pan Lead Editor of Genetic Counseling Textbook

Vivian Pan, MS, CGC, Senior Genetic Counselor at the University of Illinois Cancer Center, is lead editor of and a contributor to the newly published A Guide to Genetic Counseling, Third Edition, widely regarded as the definitive textbook in the field of genetic counseling.

Pan led the editorial effort and authored a key chapter on health disparities in genetic counseling, drawing on her extensive expertise across cancer, prenatal, pediatric, cardiovascular and adult genetics. Her research focuses on advancing the genetic counseling workforce, translating genomic innovations into practice, exploring novel genomic technologies and addressing health disparities in precision medicine.

The Cancer Center’s unique integration of genetics and cancer prevention services into primary care, particularly within the UI Health network of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) known as the Mile Square Health Center, provided a valuable perspective that enriched development of the textbook. This approach ensures that genetic counseling practices, such as those detailed in the textbook, are accessible to underserved patients, exemplifying how cutting-edge knowledge can translate into impactful, equitable healthcare solutions.

Since its first edition in 1998, A Guide to Genetic Counseling has been the foundational resource for training and supporting the next generation of genetic counselors. It serves as an essential guide for students, instructors, clinical supervisors, program directors and practicing professionals worldwide.
