WVON: Community Partner Spotlight: The Salvation Army Adele and Robert Stern Red Shield Center
Tuesday, June 9, 2026
You can still listen to WVON 1690 AM’s “Dr. in the House with Dr. Terry Mason,” when DeShawn Johnson, the Community Center Director at The Salvation Army Adele and Robert Stern Red Shield Center, was a featured guest.
Johnson is a dedicated nonprofit leader with over 20 years of experience serving communities through the Salvation Army. As the Community Center Director, he focuses on fostering strong, healthy families and promoting wellness initiatives.
The June 7 segment was co-hosted by UI Health Mile Square Health Center Executive Director and Cancer Center member Karriem Watson, DHSc, MS, MPH. The Cancer Center and Mile Square, a Federally Qualified Health Center with a network of clinics in Chicago and Rockford, are both part of UI Health, the academic health system at the University of Illinois Chicago.
The group discussed how The Salvation Army Adele and Robert Stern Red Shield Center benefits the community it serves, as well as the opportunities it has gained as part of the 2025 cohort of the Hope Leaders program, run through the University of Illinois Cancer Center Community Engagement and Health Equity Office, that connects community organizations with cancer researchers to ensure community health needs help shape scientific projects.
The first Sunday of every month is the Cancer Center and Mile Square segment on "Dr. in the House," where guests discuss cancer research and care, as well as general healthcare and services provided at UI Health.
