University of Illinois Cancer Center member Hunter Holt, MD, MAS, is the first and corresponding author on a collaborative article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine.

The article, “Self-Collected HPV Testing for Cervical Cancer Screening—Responsible Implementation to Reduce Disparities,” suggests that self-collected HPV testing can potentially transform cervical cancer screening, making it easier and more convenient for patients to be screened for cervical cancer. The study authors noted that for self-collected HPV testing to truly help everyone, healthcare systems must provide equal access to testing, information and most importantly, follow-up care.

Dr. Holt, a member of the Cancer Center’s Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program, is a board-certified family medicine physician at UI Health and Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at UIC. His research focuses on discovering and implementing solutions that address health inequities and improve patient experiences and health outcomes related to reproductive health and cervical cancer prevention.

Additional authors of this publication are from the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, and the Center for Healthcare Value at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
