University of Illinois Cancer Center Senior Genetics Counselor Vivian Pan, MS, CGC, is a contributing author on a publication in Genetics in Medicine, an official journal of the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG). The publication characterizes the 2023 medical genetics and genomics workforce in the United States with the aim of informing genetics workforce efforts.

Pan was 1 of 3 co-chairs of the National Coordinating Center (NCC) Medical Genetics Workforce Workgroup who were authors on the paper, along with NCC staff and workgroup members across the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG), National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC), Genetic Metabolic Dieticians International (GMDI), International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG) and the Society of Physician Assistants in Genetics and Genomics (SPAGG).

This landmark study included 3,070 medical genetics professionals across the U.S. and represents the most extensive assessment of the U.S. medical genetics workforce to date. The study concludes that the “medical genetics community needs to advance workforce initiatives to support current personnel and attract new and diverse individuals to the field to serve patients and their families.”
