It was a productive night at UIC's Credit Union 1 Arena on November 11. The Flames men's basketball team bested the St. Francis Fighting Saints, and fans had the opportunity to learn about lung health, screening and lung cancer from the University of Illinois Cancer Center and the UI Health Lung Cancer Screening Program.

Cancer Center member Frank Weinberg, MD, PhD, who cares for patients with lung cancer at UI Health, chatted with Flames fans and answered their questions; Lung Screening Coordinator Victoria Smith, RMA, shared information about the importance of lung cancer screening; and Osei Bekoe, MPH, a Research Specialist and Project Coordinator, focused on lung health and smoking cessation as part of the “Building Resources for Education and Awareness for the Health of Lungs” (BREATHE) program.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and Flames fans were able to spin a prize wheel and win a lung cancer ribbon nail file and a mint by answering a question about lung health, risks for lung cancer, eligibility for lung cancer screening, or lung cancer.

The Cancer Center partnership with the Flames is an opportunity to share information about cancer awareness, prevention, screening and clinical trials with our community of students, faculty, staff, their friends and families, and sports fans at games.

The Cancer Center is part of UI Health, the academic health enterprise at UIC.
