Fans who came to watch the UIC Flames men’s basketball team crush the Evansville Purple Aces on the court also had the chance to learn from another team about how family history impacts your risk for cancer.

The other team on hand at the January 20 game was the University of Illinois Cancer Center Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Clinical Programs. They shared QR codes with fans interested in taking a cancer risk assessment, discussed the importance of knowing family health history, and provided information about genetic counseling and testing.

The Cancer Center provides cancer awareness and education at some home games as part of a partnership with the Flames. The Cancer Center is part of UIC and its academic health enterprise, UI Health.

Like the Flames, the Cancer Center team reached an audience that night that extended beyond the Flames’ Credit Union 1 Arena. The Marquee Sports Network, which is available in more than 2 million homes across five states, televised the game, and the featured halftime interview guests were Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Clinical Programs Director Pamela Ganschow, MD, and Senior Genetic Counselor Vivian Pan, MS, CGC.
