Wednesday, April 1, 2026
University of Illinois Cancer Center member Jun Sun, PhD, is among four University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) faculty members named in March as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), one of the world’s largest general scientific societies.
A member of the Cancer Biology Research Program at the Cancer Center, Sun studies the role of the microbiome in diseases including cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and vitamin D deficiency. She was also a participating scientist in the Cancer Center’s Hope Leaders Program, a two-year grant-funded collaboration that connects community organizations with cancer researchers to ensure community health needs shape scientific projects and that science is shared in communities.
A Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the College of Medicine at UIC, Sun and her three UIC colleagues are part of the 2025 class of fellows that includes 449 scientists and engineers who will be honored at a forum in May in Washington, D.C.
“This year’s AAAS Fellows have demonstrated research excellence, made notable contributions to advance science, and delivered important services to their communities,” said Sudip S. Parikh, AAAS chief executive officer and executive publisher of the Science family of journals, said in a news release. “These Fellows and their accomplishments validate the importance of investing in science and technology for the benefit of all.”
