Thank You! Donations Still Open

The group of over 300 walkers and runners at the Cancer Center's 5K in 2026

Tuesday, September 29, 2026

The University of Illinois Cancer Center’s third annual 5K Walk and Run surpassed its $50,000 fundraising goal, thanks to the generosity of more than 400 supporters, many of whom came out on a glorious Chicago fall morning to participate in the Sept. 26 event.

All proceeds support the Cancer Center, and the good news is you can still donate through Oct. 31. Your support will help the Cancer Center drive change in priority areas, including research, patient care, community outreach and education, and workforce training, as it strives every day to eliminate cancer health disparities and improve cancer outcomes for all. The Cancer Center is part of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and its academic health enterprise, UI Health.

Before the start of the 5K at UIC’s Curtis Granderson Stadium, participants observed a moment of silence to honor one of the Cancer Center’s staunchest allies, Charles E. Walton, who died recently.

A dedicated and engaged member of the Cancer Center’s Community Advisory Board, he made meaningful contributions in numerous ways by participating in various committees, providing valuable insight and guidance on initiatives focused on men’s health, attending lab mixers, working closely with researchers on their grant projects, and supporting our youth and summer cancer research programming.

He will be missed.

The Cancer Center would also like to sincerely thank the sponsors who helped to make the 5K a resounding success. The sponsors (in alphabetical order) are Anambra Women United, B-Health, Clean Energy, Costco Wholesale, Equal Hope, Exelixis, Fleet Feet, Gilda's Club, Jewel-Osco, Pepsi, Portillo's, Recovery on Water, Regeneron, Sisters Working it Out, and the UIC Flames.
