Dr. Alejandra Perez-Tamayo

Dr. Alejandra Perez-Tamayo is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. She practices as  a general surgeon with specialties in breast cancer. Her research is focused on disparities in breast cancer incidence, mortality and quality of care among Hispanic women. After graduating from Loyola University with a Bachelor in Biology, she attended the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Perez-Tamayo completed her Surgical Residency with the University of Illinois affiliate Metropolitan Surgical Residency. Her interest in access to surgical care for the under insured developed as a Surgical Attending and Site Program Director for the residency at Mercy Hospital. Becoming one of the few women Chairing a Department of Surgery in Chicago, Dr. Perez-Tamayo collaborated with Sister Sheila in providing access to breast cancer diagnosis and treatment for the different under insured  communities surrounding the South Side. One of the most successful Breast Cancer programs serving the underinsured by this safety net hospital was the result of this collaboration, in conjunction with the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. She had also served on community health and major insurance boards, advocating for minorities and addressing disparities in health care. She is a mentor and teacher for women interested in entering the field of surgery, and had also been recognized for these achievements.
