Robin Mermelstein, PhD, is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychology in the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Director of the Institute for Health Research and Policy (IHRP) and Co-Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS). She joined UIC in 1989. Her interests span the full range from basic mechanisms of health-related behaviors and disease to clinical research, population health and dissemination. Her research has been continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for nearly four decades. The primary focus of her work is understanding and reducing tobacco use across all age groups and in vulnerable populations. Much of her research has addressed the question of adolescent and young adult tobacco use; understanding the development and trajectories of tobacco use; and using novel methods, such as real-time data capture, to examine the immediate contexts surrounding smoking. Her research on interventions has spanned multiple settings and providers, including schools, health care clinics, community-based treatment settings, online and social media.
