Naohiko Ikegaki, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at UIC. He has been studying the biology and immunotherapy of neuroblastoma and the MYC family proteins for more than 25 years. He works to understand molecular pathogenesis of and development of effective therapeutics against neuroblastoma, a pediatric malignancy of the neural crest origin. Although neuroblastoma is a childhood cancer of the peripheral nervous system, the research on this tumor has contributed to fundamental understandings in cancer biology. For example, neuroblastoma is the first human malignant tumor where N-myc, a proto-oncogene was found amplified in primary tumors. He has made several significant contributions to the field of cancer biology.
