Marta Markiewicz-Potoczny, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at UIC. Her research focuses on uncovering the relationship between telomere dysfunction, epigenetic alterations, and transcriptomic activation. She has found that telomere dysfunction leads to upregulation of a subset of genes typically expressed in two-cell (2C) stage embryos. The expression of 2C genes was associated with telomere elongation and genome stability. She seeks to characterize the telomere dysfunction-driven epigenetic changes, and their effect on the 2C gene expression in precancerous cells.
