Marcelo Bento Soares, PhD, is a Professor and Department Head of Cancer Biology and Pharmacology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at UIC's regional campus in Peoria. His laboratory has worked in collaboration with fellow Cancer Center member Sergey Malchenko, PhD, to study the role of mitochondrial retrograde signaling in cancer development. In particular, they are investigating the enhancement of tumor progression by reprogramming of neighboring cells upon mitochondrial transfer from cancer stem cells.
