Leslyn Hanakahi, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the
Retzky College of Pharmacy at UIC. She studies DNA damage and repair as the mechanisms that drive mutagenesis. An aspect of her research investigates repair of DNA double-strand breaks by error-prone non-homologous end joining and processes that direct DNA breaks towards this repair pathway. Another aspect of her research examines the role of lipid peroxidation products in promoting topoisomerase-mediated DNA damage.
