Joonil Jun, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics in the University of Illinois College of Medicine at UIC. He studies how epithelial plasticity during intestinal regeneration can lead to tumor initiation when misregulated. The work shows that CCN1 promotes controlled dedifferentiation via metabolic and epigenetic pathways, and its loss leads to dysplastic regeneration resembling adenomas. The aim is to define how regenerative programs become oncogenic, revealing targets for cancer prevention, early detection and therapeutic intervention.
