John Nitiss, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Assistant Dean for Research in the Retzky College of Pharmacy at UIC on the Rockford campus. A major focus of his laboratory has been anti-cancer drugs that target DNA topoisomerases. Topoisomerases are enzymes that break and reseal DNA to relieve the twisting stress that comes from cellular processes such as transcription and DNA replication. Because topoisomerases must break DNA during their reaction cycle, they have the potential to induce genome changes that may be deleterious and may drive cancer progression. They use a combination of genetic and biochemical tools to understand the action of anti-cancer agents.
