Jan Hendrik Spille, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at UIC. He joined UIC in 2020. Professor Spille’s research uses state-of-the-art fluorescence microscopy to resolve biophysical principles of structure and function in the cell nucleus. The Spille Lab works at the interface of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Current efforts in the lab are directed towards understanding how biomolecular condensates form and regulate processes such as transcription. For this purpose, his lab develops new tools for quantitative super resolution imaging of DNA, RNA and proteins and combines them with quantitative live cell imaging, cell line engineering, in vitro reconstitution and computational modeling. His affiliations with the University of Illinois Cancer Center, and the Departments of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering, have allowed him to engage in stimulating collaborations and form a multi-disciplinary team of trainees with backgrounds in physics, biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics.
