University of Illinois Cancer Center Oncogeneralist and previvor Deborah Manst, MD, MPH, part of the UI Health survivorship program, along with well-known patient advocate and three-time cancer survivor Wenora Johnson, were featured in a news article about cancer survivorship in the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).
In the article, journalist Aline Wanner looks at the differences between the care and support Swiss cancer patients receive versus the care and support American patients receive.
“In the U.S., cancer patients must often be their own health care advocates. This has helped create a community of cancer survivors that offers the long-term support Swiss patients lack. A visit with doctors, activists and patients in Chicago and Bern,” Wanner wrote.
Both Manst and Johnson are pictured in the article and they share their respective stories as physician and survivor. Johnson was the featured patient advocate speaker at the Cancer Center’s 2024 Dr. Gary Kruh Cancer Research Syposium and Student Poster Competition.
