Beyond a New Year’s Resolution: Culture and Healthy Eating

January 6 at 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Angela Odoms-Young, PhD, associate professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Applied Health Sciences, will join Robert Winn, MD, director of the University of Illinois Cancer Center, and Karriem Watson, DHSc, MS, MPH, co-director of the UI Cancer Center’s OCERIS (Office of Community Engaged Research and Implementation Science) team, on WVON Sunday, Jan. 6, to discuss the topic, “Beyond a New Year’s Resolution: Culture and Healthy Eating.” Odoms-Young’s research is focused on understanding social, cultural, and environmental determinants of dietary behaviors and diet-related diseases in low-income and minority populations. Her current projects include studies to evaluate the impact of the new WIC food package on dietary intake, weight status, and chronic disease risk in 2-3-year-old low-income children and vendor participation; identify strategies to improve program participation and retention among WIC eligible children; evaluate the efficacy of a community-based participatory weight loss intervention in African American women; and examine community engagement approaches to promote food justice.

The one-hour radio program, beginning at 10 a.m. on 1690 AM, is part of the “Dr. In The House With Dr. Terry Mason” segment. Winn and Watson host the show the first Sunday of each month.
