Achieving Equity: Disparities in Cancer

Achieving Equity: Disparities in Cancer

Researchers, clinicians, community organizations, agencies, students, and engaged citizens are invited to join us for "Achieving Equity: Disparities in Cancer" on Thursday, October 17, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, Room 5602.

According to the National Cancer Institute Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities, African American men are more than twice as likely as white men to die of prostate cancer. African Americans also suffer from higher mortality rates and higher incidence rates of colorectal cancer than all other racial/ethnic groups, except American Indians/Alaska Natives.

This free, half-day event aims to examine how our research, healthcare, and broader communities can work together to reduce these disparities. The agenda includes keynotes by Dr. Karriem Watson (UIC) and Dr. Charles Rogers (University of Utah), highlights of current research at Illinois, a prevention and survivorship panel, and a networking lunch to discuss future directions.

This is the inaugural event in IHSI's Achieving Equity dialogue series. This new series seeks to enhance human wellbeing by illuminating topics of injustice and disparity in health. We welcome diverse participation from campus and the larger community with a focus on creating positive changes in human health and wellbeing.
