Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

As part of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in January, Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) Community Navigators from the University of Illinois Cancer Center, the Chicago Family Health Center and Equal Hope hosted an event at the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) building in downtown Chicago.

Because most cervical cancers are preventable, the navigators provided goodie bags and educational materials about cervical health to more than 100 participants at the January 10 event.

Information also was provided about the IBCCP program, which covers breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured individuals living in Illinois, regardless of income. Cancer Center member Hunter Holt, MD, a UI Health family medicine physician and researcher who focuses on cervical cancer, also was on hand to answer questions in an “Ask the Doc” session.

In honor of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, the BCBS building lit up “Chicago Fights Cancer” in the month’s signature teal.
