ACS offers information on cancer screening during the COVID-19 pandemic

The University of Illinois Cancer Center’s Community Outreach and Engagement office’s mission is to promote and conduct community evidence-based screenings and navigation facilitated through community and academic partnerships. One key relationship is with the American Cancer Society, and the Cancer Center wants to provide relevant information on cancer screening amidst the pandemic.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, elective medical procedures, including cancer screenings, were largely halted to prioritize urgent needs and reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19 in healthcare settings. One consequence of this has been a substantial decline in cancer screening.

As states and other authorities re-open businesses and ease restrictions, many healthcare facilities are once again starting to offer elective procedures again, including cancer screening. The American Cancer Society is providing detailed information on how to safely begin offering cancer screenings, ensuring the protection for both patients and healthcare personnel.
